About JANEEMO
What is JANEEMO?
JANEEMO is a system to grow and benefit from the three tree species: JAtropha; NEem; and MOringa (hence the acronym, JANEEMO). They are grown by farmers as living fences around household and field boundaries and intercropped with maize and other staples. The products are processed using tried and tested methods, used at the household level or sold locally.
Why JANEEMO trees?
Three tree species, Jatropha, Neem and Moringa, collectively known as JANEEMO, have been grown in Malawi for some time.
- Neem (Nimu) was planted widely in the Lower Shire in the 1980’s as a source of firewood;
- In parts of the region Jatropha (Msatsimanga) was planted as a windbreak;
- Moringa (Sangowa) has been commonly used as a food source.
Since 2007, the JANEEMO partners have been actively encouraging planting of the three trees in combination at the smallholder level.
What are they used for?
The trees all have multiple uses. Their oil-rich seeds can be processed to produce locally used biofuels for lamps, stoves and generators, or turned into soap. Extracts from the Neem and Moringa trees have important nutritional as well as medicinal uses.
The residue from this process can be used to produce biogas for cooking and an agricultural fertiliser.
