How it Helps

Natural source of energy

Jatropha, Neem and Moringa all have multiple uses.  Their oil-rich seeds can be processed to produce locally used biofuels for lamps, stoves and generators, or turned into soap.  The residue from this process can be used to produce biogas for cooking and then finally as an agricultural fertiliser. In addition, extracts from the Neem and Moringa trees have important nutritional as well as medicinal uses.

Meeting local needs

Priority is being given to meeting household and village fuel needs. Hand oil presses for biofuel processing have been distributed.

Community enterprise

A seed-pass on scheme has ensured the planting develops its own momentum. Markets have been developed for Neem woodfuel, Moringa powder and Jatropha oil - ensuring farmers have ready access to income opportunities.
