Chikwawa District Commissioner Support Letter

Chikwawa District Commissioner support letter

"To Whom It May Concern

With reference to the grant application that has been made for community development of renewable energy options in Mitondo area in Chikwawa District, I would like to express my full support for this work on the following basis:

  • Entech is currently engaged in the promotion of oilseed trees in the District which started last year with Training of Trainers linked to District Forestry staff and funded through the European Union.  The programme is now being expanded through farmer to farmer extension work.  Due to the poverty levels in this Disrict, a household lives on less than a USD a day, the environment has been over exploited to meet the household energy needs.  This programme is promoting the oilseed trees both for energy and income generation.
  • Chikwawa District, the East Bank (where Mitondo is situated) is prone to flooding.  Communities in this area are hugely affected by climatic change whereby they are displaced and they lose crops due to flooding.  Ways of protecting and managing the environment will go a long way to address their problems.
  • The Chikwawa District Development Plan (2006-2009) has identified environmental degradation as one of the challenges that the district has to address in order to unlock its potential for food security, safe water and sanitation and sustainable appropriate technologies.

Multiple level interventions are required in this District so as to adequately address social challenges.  We welcome the possibility of interfacing with international partners to share and learn from our experiences and challenges."
